The Pinwheel Method™

When a child is struggling, it’s not always clear what is driving the problem, what kind of support is needed, or what should happen first.

The Pinwheel Method™ is how we make that clearer: a physician- and psychologist-led, team-based, assessment-informed approach to child mental health, behaviour, and learning care.

No unnecessary confusion. Just a clear, structured approach to understanding what your child needs next.

Families need a clear understanding of the problem, a plan that fits the child, and care that is reviewed as it goes.

What Is The Pinwheel Method™?

The Pinwheel Method™ is how we approach child mental health, behaviour, and learning concerns when the next step needs to be clear.

It starts with assessment of what is actually going on. Then a plan is built, care or intervention is provided when appropriate, progress is reviewed, and next steps are decided clearly.

How Is This Different?

Families are often offered support without a clear process.

Assessment, counselling, school concerns, and medical questions can end up handled separately. That can make it harder to understand the main problem, why a plan was chosen, or whether the current approach is helping.

The Pinwheel Method™ is different because it is:

How The Pinwheel Method™ Works

shape together

1. Understanding what’s really going on

We begin with a psychological assessment or focused diagnostic interview to clarify the core issues behind your child’s difficulties. This reduces uncertainty and helps ensure the treatment plan reflects your child’s actual needs.

2. Building a clear plan together

Our physician and child psychologist review the findings with your family, discuss evidence-based treatment options, set practical goals, and decide how progress will be measured. Parents and children are active participants in that process.

Family insight is part of the process, and school information may be included when it helps clarify daily functioning.

3. Focused, evidence-based treatment

Most families participate in a structured, time-limited program. Many treatment pathways are about 12 weeks, depending on the child’s needs and the type of care required. Treatment is focused on symptom reduction, emotional regulation, daily functioning, and quality of life at home and school.

4. Checking progress and adjusting early

Progress is monitored using validated tools, and goals are reviewed partway through care. If something isn’t working, we adjust the plan early rather than waiting until the end.

5. Clear next steps

At the end of the program, progress is reviewed together and next steps are decided. That may include discharge, brief follow-up support, or transition to lower-intensity care. Outcomes are communicated clearly with your family doctor and, when appropriate, your child’s school.
