Child and Youth Counselling in Victoria
When a child is struggling with anxiety, behaviour issues, big emotions, or school challenges, it can feel like everyone has an opinion, and none of it feels helpful. Parents are left unsure what to do or who to trust.
At Pinwheel Clinic, we bring clarity to complex child mental health concerns. Our team of physicians, child psychologists, and child counsellors helps families, doctors, and schools understand the root cause of a child’s difficulties and transform that insight into a clear, evidence-based therapy plan.
Our care is guided by The Pinwheel Method™, a structured, research‑driven approach that identifies the core problem first and then provides targeted treatment with measurable progress. We offer comprehensive child mental health assessments, therapy for child anxiety, ADHD, anger, tics, emotional dysregulation, and school‑related problems, along with parent coaching, emotional regulation support, and school collaboration.
Families leave with a clear diagnosis, practical tools, and a confident path forward.
No guesswork. No secrets. No gimmicks. Just transparent, proven child mental health care that works.
The Pinwheel Method™ is a physician‑ and child psychologist‑led, team‑based, and assessment‑driven approach to child mental health care. It creates clarity before action, ensuring children receive treatment that truly matches their needs. This structured model supports families seeking help for anxiety, ADHD, behavioural challenges, tics, OCD, emotional dysregulation, and school‑related difficulties.
1. Understanding what’s really going on: Assessment & Diagnostic Clarity
We begin with a psychological assessment or focused diagnostic interview to identify the core issues behind your child’s challenges. This reduces uncertainty and ensures the treatment plan reflects your child’s actual needs.
2. Building a clear plan together: Collaborative Treatment Planning
Our physician and child psychologist review findings with your family, discuss evidence‑based treatment options, and set practical, meaningful goals. Parents and children are active participants in this process.
3. Focused, evidence-based treatment: Structured 12-Week Programs
Most families take part in a structured, approximately 12‑week program. Treatment focuses on symptom reduction, emotional regulation, daily functioning, and quality of life at home and school.
4. Checking progress and adjusting early: Mid-Course Corrections
Progress is monitored using validated tools, and goals are reviewed mid‑treatment. If something isn’t working, we adjust early rather than waiting until the end.
5. Clear next steps: Transition or Continued Support
At the end of the program, we review progress and decide next steps together, whether that’s graduation, brief follow‑up, or transition to lower‑intensity care.
When Is Child Counselling Appropriate?
Counselling can be helpful when a child is experiencing emotional, behavioural, or school-related challenges that are beginning to affect daily life at home, at school, or with peers.
Some children benefit from short-term supportive counselling that helps them build coping strategies, understand their emotions, and work through specific challenges. In other cases, counselling may be one part of a broader treatment plan that includes structured programs or team-based care.
Counselling may be helpful when a child is experiencing:
Anxiety
School refusal
Emotional outbursts
Oppositional behaviours
Attention or impulsivity concerns
Low mood
School difficulties
These concerns often overlap. For example, anxiety can contribute to school refusal, while attention difficulties may lead to frustration or emotional outbursts. Understanding what is driving the difficulty is an important first step.
An intake consultation helps determine which treatment approach will be the most effective for you and your child. This may involve supportive counselling, a structured treatment program, or further assessment depending on the child’s needs.
