Psychological Assessment for Children and Youth in Victoria
When a child is struggling at school or at home, it can be hard to understand why.
Your child may be working hard but falling behind academically. Anxiety may keep them from activities they want to enjoy. Distractibility, behaviour, or emotional outbursts may feel overwhelming for both you and your child.
A psychological assessment brings clarity to these challenges. It identifies the underlying reasons for learning difficulties, behaviour concerns, attention problems, or emotional struggles and provides a clear plan for what to do next.
At Pinwheel Clinic, we offer comprehensive psychological and psychoeducational assessments for children and youth across Victoria and Greater Victoria. We are a physician‑ and child psychologist‑led clinic specializing in child mental health, learning difficulties, ADHD assessment, school challenges, behavioural concerns, and gifted assessment.
We do not begin with treatment recommendations. We begin with a structured, evidence‑based evaluation.
Before suggesting counselling, academic intervention, medication, or school accommodations, we complete a careful clinical review so that next steps are informed by data and not guesswork.
When Should a Psychological Assessment Be Considered?
Persistent reading, writing, or math difficulties
Academic performance that does not reflect effort
Questions about attention, focus, or impulsivity
Anxiety affecting school participation
Emotional regulation challenges
Behaviour patterns that are difficult to interpret
Concern about possible learning disorders or ADHD
What’s Included in a Psychoeducational Assessment?
Each assessment is tailored to the referral question. The scope is discussed clearly at intake so expectations are defined from the beginning.
Depending on the concern, the process may include:
Clinical History
A detailed discussion of developmental, academic, medical, and emotional background.
Standardized Testing
- Validated measures may assess:
- Cognitive ability
- Academic achievement
- Attention and executive functioning
- Memory
- Emotional functioning
Testing is structured and evidence-based.
Clinical Interpretation
Results are interpreted by a licensed psychologist. When appropriate, medical factors are considered in collaboration with our physician as part of our coordinated clinical framework.
Feedback Meeting
Parents receive a clear explanation of findings. If diagnostic criteria are met, this is discussed carefully and in context. Questions are encouraged so families leave with clarity rather than confusion.
Written Report
- Families receive a structured written report outlining:
- Findings
- Diagnostic conclusions when applicable
- Practical recommendations
Reports are designed to be shared with schools, physicians, or other providers to guide planning.
How Assessment Guides
Next Steps
Assessment provides clear evidence-based recommendations to address your child’s challenges and support their success.
Recommendations may include:
School accommodations or support planning
A targeted academic intervention plan for reading or writing gaps
Child counselling or structured anxiety treatment
Parent-focused behaviour strategies
Monitoring with defined review points
Medical consultation when appropriate
Not every child requires ongoing treatment. Sometimes assessment clarifies that strengths are intact and support can be focused or time-limited.
Recommendations are grounded in clinical findings and day-to-day functioning, not just labels.

Our approach is evidence-based and built to support families in real situations, not ideal ones.
Yes. If a child meets diagnostic criteria based on structured evaluation and clinical judgment, this will be explained clearly and documented in the report.
School-based assessments vary in scope and available resources. Most school assessments examine only cognitive abilities or academic skills. A private psychological assessment includes comprehensive standardized testing, detailed interpretation, and a written report that families can use in school planning discussions. School-based assessments answer only academic questions, while psychological assessments answer a wide range of questions.
No. Families can contact us directly to schedule an intake.
The timeline depends on the referral question and scope of testing. This is discussed during intake so expectations are clear before testing begins.
Coverage depends on your individual plan. Many families have partial reimbursement through extended health benefits. We recommend confirming details directly with your insurance provider. Pinwheel Clinic also offers direct billing with some insurers as well as support through Jordan’s Principle and Variety BC.
